Verifone helps speed up transportation in Morocco
Covering 30km in one of the North Africa’s largest cities, Casablanca’s first tramline is expected to carry up to 250,000 passengers a day when it opens in December 2012. Secure e-transaction specialists, M2M Group, has been tasked with installing an integrated contactless ticketing system in the tramline’s 48 stations and has specified Verifone devices to provide optimum convenience and reliability for all passenger payments.
The Casablanca tramline will help rejuvenate the city by linking its diverse economic, social and residential districts with a clean, environmentally friendly and convenient public transportation system. It will also be one of the first full scale contactless ticketing solutions to be rolled out in Morocco.
With 48 stations located along the tram route, the project presents many logistical and technical challenges. This includes providing a passenger facing ticketing infrastructure that offers good connectivity for processing payments and which is also secure enough for unattended installations.
Responsible for delivering this solution, M2M Group had to source and supply suitable POS terminals that would be easy to integrate into its epayment system and ticketing system. Reliability was key. So was the ability to deliver the latest consumer facing technologies including contactless travel cards and payments to help speed the throughput of passengers and prevent congestion around station sales points.
M2M specified Verifone’s VX 700 unattended 16-key PIN pad combined with high resolution display and contactless reader to drive payments on unattended ticketing machines. The VX 700 offers a variety of connectivity options and ample memory to support multiple applications, including ticketing. It is also extremely secure, complying with the industry security standards and with a robust, tamper-resistant design.
To support attended payment within the station, M2M chose the Verifone VX 820 DUET PCI PTS 3.0 certified device. This smart solution delivers both a PIN pad and functional base with printer, creating a handover countertop device that includes an integrated printer for speedy processing and issuing of receipts. It also offers optional Ethernet connectivity for exceptionally fast transaction speeds. And can accept multiple forms of payment, from credit, debit and EMV to NFC and contactless.
Using Verifone solutions, M2M has been able to create the infrastructure to support contactless payments and automatic ticketing across all 48 stations, linking 200 POS terminals and 200 vending machines into a single unified system.
As well as handling payments, the ticketing system from M2M will be able to issue and recharge contactless cards as well as selling single-trip contactless tickets.
Able to withstand the rigours of a mass transit environment, the Verifone payment devices are easy to integrate with the ticketing system to ensure the fast issue of reloadable contactless cards and contactless tickets and a more rapid flow of passengers through the tramline’s access points.
Incorporating end-to-end encryption, the Verifone devices allow passengers to pay for their journeys using their credit, debit and contactless cards at both unattended and manned sales points without compromising security.
Ensuring fast and secure card acceptance, the Verifone devices are also exceptionally robust which means they are reliable even in heavy use and in outdoor locations.
This is particularly important for the unattended units which not only need to withstand Casablanca’s high temperatures but also protect against vandalism. To help improve energy efficiency and reduce overheads, the Verifone VX 700 also utilizes low power modes when idle, but powers up quickly on demand.
The added flexibility of Verifone’s devices also allows easy integration with custom designed hardware. This has allowed M2M to equip 500 secure access points with validation machines suitable for disabled passengers so that they are also able to easily access and use the ticketing facilities.
